It may seem a little strange to be thinking about summer as we head into the Holiday Season, yet families everywhere begin thinking about ways to give their children a meaningful break from school. For many, summer camp promises adventure, friendship, and unforgettable memories. But one key aspect that makes summer camp truly unique is the chance for kids to go screen-free.
In today’s world, screens are everywhere. Opportunities to disconnect are becoming increasingly rare, especially for a generation growing up with a constant digital presence. While technology is undoubtedly important in our daily lives, it’s equally essential to recognize its negative effects, especially on young people. Summer camp provides the perfect opportunity for kids to take a break from the impossible standards and pressures that can come with social media.
As someone who just barely makes it into Gen Z (which I will gladly remind everyone), I have a unique perspective on both worlds. I grew up in the in-between time, where flip phones were cool, and social media was a new, mysterious privilege that I petitioned my parents for—yes, I had a persuasive PowerPoint presentation! That unplugged upbringing taught me lessons that I didn’t fully appreciate until later. Here’s why a screen-free experience like camp is so powerful for young girls today:
Building Real Connections
Camp is all about making friends, and when kids put down their screens, they’re free to form genuine, face-to-face relationships. Without notifications or filters, campers connect in meaningful ways—laughing, sharing stories, working through challenges, and building memories that last long after camp ends. Summer friendships are unique because they’re grounded in real interactions, where kids can truly be themselves. Whether they’re at camp for two-weeks or the whole summer, it’s a rare chance to just be kids.
Encouraging Independence and Confidence
At camp, girls get to step out of their comfort zones and try new things, like kayaking, climbing, cooking over a campfire, or any of our other extensive activities. Without screens to fall back on, they learn to rely on their creativity, instincts, and resilience. This screen-free setting fosters independence and builds confidence in ways that scrolling through a feed just can’t compare to. By the end of camp, parents often notice how much their daughters have grown in self-confidence.
Immersing in Nature
At Kippewa, we’re lucky to be nestled in the heart of Maine’s beautiful wilderness. Camp offers an ideal setting for girls to connect with nature. Waking up to the sound of birds, feeling the crunch of pine needles underfoot, or swimming in our crystal clear lake, and falling asleep to the sound of loons (after we explain what that weird noise is)—all these experiences become even more vivid without screens. Campers tune in to the world around them, and are curious about what they are seeing and experiencing out in the woods!
Without screens, girls can form real connections, grow through new challenges, and fully embrace the outdoors. This screen-free break isn’t just refreshing; it’s transformative, creating memories and growth that last well beyond summer.
