BUNK LIFE

CONNECTION & COMFORT

At Kippewa, your cabin is more than just a place to sleep—it’s your home away from home. Living together in a bunk is at the heart of the camp experience, where friendships are formed, inside jokes are born, and lifelong memories take shape.

KEA campers live in a custom-designed, two-story cabin created specifically for our equestrian program. Overlooking the horse turnouts and riding rings, this bright and welcoming space is designed for comfort, connection, and convenience.

Key features include:

  • A two-story, double-sided layout with gorgeous views of the horse areas

  • An inviting entryway with storage cubbies and a central gathering space

  • Full bathrooms with sinks, toilets, and showers

  • Electricity and screened, glass-paned windows for fresh air and natural light

  • Comfortable wooden bunk beds and personal cubbies for each camper

Campers are grouped by age and divided into two bunks—one on each side of the cabin. Each bunk has 2–3 counselors who live alongside the girls, creating a supportive and caring environment. Our head counselor resides upstairs in the KEA cabin, ensuring she’s always nearby and available as needed.

Bunk life at KEA is a meaningful part of the experience. All of our campers come together with a shared love of horses, making it easy to connect and form friendships right from the start. Whether they’re hanging out in the bunk, sharing meals, or riding side by side, KEA campers create a summer home filled with laughter, support, and unforgettable moments.

MEALS AT CAMP

We take food seriously at Kippewa—because camp food should be delicious, nutritious, and something to look forward to! KEA campers eat all together with meals served family-style, bringing campers and counselors together around the table. Our menus offer balanced, kid-friendly, and flavorful options, including:

  • Salad bars, pasta bars, and vegetarian choices at every meal

  • Breakfast bars with fresh fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, cereal, and more

  • Sunbutter & jelly station (our nut-free PB&J alternative) available all day

  • Daily snacks including fresh fruit, with occasional homemade cookies, and ice cream treats

  • Outdoor BBQs & lunches

  • Closing-session Maine lobster bake, a beloved Kippewa tradition

Campers leave Kippewa raving about the food—and sometimes even trying to recreate their favorite camp meals at home!

A TYPICAL DAY

Our schedule at KEA is specifically structured to create a routine that quickly feels familiar and natural.  At the same time, we have the luxury of being flexible and making adjustments as needed. Our staff and campers all live together, surrounded by our equestrian and camp facilities, which makes it easy for us to structure each day in the way that works best for our campers’ needs. Below is an example of our typical daily schedule, demonstrating the full range of our program. In addition to the focused riding lesson time, time spent with project horses and working on theory in action often means working in the saddle on specific skills and goals.

Every session we also enjoy a camp-favorite excursion, visiting the local racetrack to cheer on the harness racers at First Tracks Cumberland. Our campers frequently find themselves helping out in the announcement booth and joining the champions in the winners circle!

HEALTH & WELLNESS

We prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of every camper. Our Health Center, lovingly known as the "Pillbox," is staffed 24/7 by three registered nurses and a nursing assistant who are always available to provide expert care and support.

We maintain a strong partnership with a pediatric telehealth practice, and we are within 20 minutes of two hospitals, ensuring that additional medical care is always within reach if needed.

Our friendly and attentive nurses are here to help with everything from minor ailments to medication management, ensuring campers feel their best throughout their stay. The Pillbox is a comfortable, air-conditioned space where girls can rest and recharge whenever needed—because a happy, healthy camper is ready for all the fun that Kippewa has to offer!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Have questions? We’ve got answers! Here are some common questions parents and campers ask about camp. Contact us if you require further assistance.

  • Campers are required to write letters home two to three times during their time at camp. Parents can send one-way emails, however campers are not able to send emails back. They will be so busy having fun at camp there won’t be any time for the computer anyways!

We also post daily photos and a news update during the summer so parents can keep up with all the fun their daughter is experiencing.

  • We do not allow packages – please make sure friends and family members are aware of this policy. Any package received without previous permission from a director will be held until the end of the session and either returned to parents or donated. Please do not send food or gum as these items are not allowed in the cabins and will be confiscated.

  • We want everyone to make the most out of their camping experience by spending time engaged in activities and talking face to face with friends, counselors, and horses. Therefore, cell phones and electronic games (Gameboys, PSPs, etc) are not permitted at camp. Basic MP3 players (such as iPod Shuffles) are allowed in the cabins. Camp Kippewa is not responsible for any lost, damaged, or stolen MP3 players.  Our basic policy is to only allow basic music players, or in other words those that are “screen free”.

We also do not allow hair dryers or flat irons. We want the focus to be on making friends, having fun, and just being yourself without worrying about what your hair looks like! Girls are so busy having fun they don’t miss them, and actually tell us they enjoy the freedom.

  • No, we do not require uniforms. We do ask everyone to bring a logo’d shirt for special events and pictures but not to wear on a daily basis. We just ask that girls wear non-designer, “camp-friendly” clothing. Clothing should be appropriate for doing morning chores, comfortable riding attire and gear, and some casual clothing for evening activities and other non-riding times. A packing list will be provided. KEA logo clothing can be purchased through Amerasport, or equestrian attire can be purchased directly through j.b.creighton. It is important that all campers bring rain gear! We carry on with activities and horse care even when it’s wet outside.

  • We have three registered nurses along with a nursing student who live at camp in our “Pillbox” (the health center) and are available 24/7.  We also have an established relationship with a local family practice medical office located a few miles from camp. There are also two hospitals located within 20-30 minutes of camp. Our nurses are very friendly and helpful if someone isn’t feeling well, and our Pillbox has space for girls to lie down and rest if needed. Our nurses distribute all prescription and non-prescription medication for our campers.

  • Camp Kippewa is located in Monmouth, Maine, which is 15 miles southwest of Augusta (Maine’s capital) and one hour from the Portland International Jetport. Just 3 hours north of Boston, Camp Kippewa is perfectly located in the stunning wilderness of Maine, on the shores of magnificent Lake Cobbosseecontee. Our brother camp, Camp Cobbossee, is less than 1/2 mile away on the same lake.

  • Transportation is available from/to: Newton, MA; Port Chester, NY; and Portland Jetport, Maine (PWM). Parents are welcome to drop off/pick up their campers as well.
