OUR RIDING PROGRAM

We offer a top-quality English riding program that emphasizes skill development, progression, and confidence-building, following Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) standards. Our team is made up of experienced and passionate instructors who are not only focused on riding technique, but also on creating a fun, engaging atmosphere where campers feel supported every step of the way.

Whether campers are refining existing skills or taking their riding to the next level, Kippewa Equestrian Academy is a place where they grow, learn, and truly have fun—both in and out of the saddle.

PERSONALIZED RIDING INSTRUCTION

Our instructors provide professional-level, English Equitation-based lessons, carefully tailored to each camper’s individual experience, learning style, and personal goals. We understand that working with our well-loved camp horses may be different from what some riders are used to at home, and we’re here to help every camper adapt, grow, and thrive in our supportive, encouraging environment.

Our building-block curriculum is structured to support progressive development in key areas like balance, position, effective aids, and overall technique. Riders focus on mastering their flatwork—transitions, lateral movements, and use of aids—and as they progress, they gain confidence over poles, cavalettis, and fences up to 2’3” when appropriate for their level.

Instruction also includes a strong horsemanship component, ensuring each rider gains hands-on experience in horse care, groundwork, and stable management. Through this well-rounded approach, campers become more confident, adaptable, and skilled riders with a deep respect and understanding of their equine partners.

HORSEMANSHIP IN ACTION

At KEA, learning doesn’t stop when riders dismount. Our program includes unmounted instruction in essential areas such as horse anatomy, nutrition, hoof care, and fitness. Campers dive into the why behind what they do in the saddle, helping them become more informed and intuitive riders.

One of the most unique aspects of our program is our connection to the Maine Harness Horse Association and the versatile Standardbred breed. These incredible horses—many of whom have transitioned from careers on the racetrack—are an essential part of our program. Campers learn how to retrain and care for former racehorses, building invaluable skills in patience, empathy, and adaptability.

Campers also gain experience with injury rehabilitation, understanding how to support a horse’s physical and emotional recovery. Daily routines include grooming, tacking up, feeding, and barn chores—all of which deepen the bond between horse and rider and reinforce the values of responsibility and care.

FITNESS ROUTINES

Horseback riding is a sport—and our campers are athletes. At KEA, we support our riders’ performance by incorporating a structured daily fitness routine focused on cardio, core strength, and flexibility. These rotating sessions are designed to complement time in the saddle, helping campers improve balance, stamina, and coordination.

Whether they’re cantering around the arena or learning how to sit deeper in the saddle, our fitness program ensures that campers are physically prepared for the challenges and demands of riding. More importantly, it helps build confidence, body awareness, and resilience—qualities that carry through every part of life at camp and beyond.
